FOREWORD
Dear Participants,
Welcome to the Boulder Fence Model Design Competition 2019. Young Engineers Section (YES) of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Penang Branch, with the help and support from local engineering community, has been organizing this annual event for high school students.
The objectives of this competition have become more meaningful this year. In addition to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), this competition aims to promote the public and student’s awareness of landslide hazards especially in our Penang state.
Engineering students are challenged to an intercollegiate competition that supplements their education with a comprehensive, student-driven project experience from conception and design through fabrication, erection and testing that meet client specifications, optimizes performance and economy. Success in competition requires application of engineering principles, theory and effective teamwork. Future engineers are stimulated to innovate and practice professionalism.
This event is designed as a fun way for high school students to develop engineering skills through critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork and creativity. It exposes students to the engineering profession and introduces them to some of the challenges and triumphs that engineers face in their careers. We hope that this competition sparks each student’s interest in engineering and opens new doors for their pursuit of math, science or engineering-related career.
This year’s competition will be held on Sunday, 30th June 2019, from 12:00pm to 7:00pm and will serve as our opening event for Engineering Week 2019 (Penang Branch), which is recognized and celebrated throughout the Penang state from June 30th to July 6th, 2019.
On behalf of the IEM-YES (Penang Branch) Committee, best of luck to you and your team.
Sincerely,
2019 Engineering Week Organising Chairman
The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia – Young Engineers Section (Penang Branch)
OVERVIEW
As a participant in this year’s Boulder Fence Model Design Competition, you will be working with a team from your school (two to five students and one guiding teacher) on the design and construction of a boulder fence. Each team is required to design and build a boulder fence model with the materials provided in the “Competition Kit”. The model should take the impact of simulated boulders along the sloping channel of the competition fixture. The model must be able to retain all “boulders”, i.e. the model together with all boulders must not fall outside the testing area. The number of boulders will be increased progressively in each subsequent test until the model fails the test.
The competition is open to all high school (Form 4 and Form 5) students in Penang state, which includes the districts of Northeast Penang Island, Southwest Penang Island, North Seberang Perai, Central Seberang Perai and South Seberang Perai.
Each team will be awarded points based on their boulder fence’s performance in four different categories, i.e. Strength, Time Management, Aesthetic and Presentation. At the end of the competition, all points will be tallied and compared to the scores of all the competing teams. There is a total of 100 possible points in this competition.
OBJECTIVES
To provide an exciting, challenging, and educational experience to the students while exposing them through hands-on activities to the many wonders of engineering as a profession. This will be accomplished by:
- Promoting engineering skills not only the technical aspects of problem solving, but also emphasizing the importance of teamwork and communication.
- Creating opportunities for interaction among students, teachers, and the engineering community.
- Inspiring students to pursue a career in engineering.
- Promoting the public and student’s awareness of landslide hazards especially in our Penang state.
